Every year, around this time, my little street in a great Toronto neighbourhood [South Riverdale/Leslieville ],  holds ‘The Tiverton Avenue Film Festival’. While this annual event occurs during the Toronto International Film Festival, you will never see George Clooney [:-(], Sean Penn or Angelina Jolie. You will see neighbours. and lots of them. Kids – lots of them – run free in the park til way past bedtime, loving the temporary independence while the parents chat, drink wine and eat roasted corn.

Dave and Lynn organize this yearly pot luck event. They make the posters, they prepare the video that will entertain the crowd after dark, they roast the corn. This year – the 12th – was the biggest. What once was a white sheet tied to the chain link fence is now an actual screen. The equipment may be fancier, but the mood is the same.

This year I thought I would share my favourite, one man’s adventure. “November 9th 2007 – November 13th 2008 one year on foot – 4646km through China unlimited beard & hair growth http://www.thelongestway.com musical score by the kingpins.”

Oh…and thanks Lynn and Dave for making this event part of our neighbourhood tradition. Happy to be part of such a great community.

torontomedia-0409-3-525x3181The first Toronto PSFK Good Ideas Salon, co-hosted with Capital C, was held in late April, with a dynamic panel discussing ‘Good Ideas in Media’. The video of the entire discussion is now available for viewing on the Good Ideas Salon site

“The well rounded panel, featured members representing different facets of the media landscape: Mathew Ingram of Globe & Mail (print), Jesse Hirsh of the CBC (broadcast), Jonathan Lister of Google Canada (Internet), David Jones of Hill & Knowlton (PR) and moderator Tony Chapman of Capital C (advertising and marketing).”

Thanks to all the panelists for participating, PSFK, and to everyone who made it out to the event. I look forward to hosting these events on a regular basis, and would love to hear feedback & suggestions for future panels.

It’s finally here!  When I met Piers Fawkes [PSFK] in November at a Future Trends Conference, I told him if he ever wanted to do anything in Toronto, I would be happy to help.  I was very honoured when a couple of months later he took me up on my offer. PSFK was taking the Good Ideas Salons to new locations, and Toronto was one of them, [until that time, it was just London and New York]. It has been a lot of planning and logistics, and luckily Capital C Communications, a very creative and innovative agency, was more than willing to co-host.  Offering up not only their great space downtown, but everything else that is needed to make this event a success.  Including our 3 great panelists for our first event – ‘Good Ideas in Media’. Our panel of media experts include, Jesse Hirsh, Internet strategist, researcher, and broadcaster [CBC] based in Toronto; David Jones, Vice President, digital communications at Hill & Knowlton, Toronto; and Jonathan Lister, Managing Director and Head of Google Canada. The panel will be moderated by Capital C’s Tony Chapman.

The video from the first Vancouver Salon, held in March, can be viewed here.  Only 40 tickets will be available, and are  expected to go quickly.  Go to Eventbrite, to purchase.

We know it will be a great night, full of conversation, fun and even some drinks….check out the announcement on the PSFK site for more info.
